Let's face it. This isn't about games anymore.
I'm Free!!!
Two weeks and three days ago, I bought a copy of GTA. I played the game . . . a lot.
I mean, I was playing the game 12 hours a day. It's not that I was obsessed by it . . . not really. There just wasn't anything else I wanted to do. I had a bunch of projects, but I just kinda ignored them. When I wasn't playing GTA, I was thinking about playing the game (what challenges I had left, what strategies I could use on the current challenges, etc.). Luckily, I'm unemployed right now, or else I would
have been nervous about losing all that time into the black hole of GTA.
Yesterday, I noticed something odd. I was driving through Angel Pine, thinking about the Chiliad challenge in that town, reminding myself that I had to complete it to get my 100%, and I sighed. It wasn't like a switch had gone off in my head, it's just that I realized I was grinding in the game. I wasn't playing it because I loved it, I was just playing it to get the job done.
Then, this morning, I woke up clean. I didn't have any interest in turning on GTA. I looked around, and saw all the other things I wanted to do. My wife had bought a handheld engraving kit, and after cutting my initials into my laptop, I spent two hours carving an intricate design onto the laptop palmrests. I cleaned up the house a bit. I wrote a program that converts Apache Web logs to MySQL databases (I'm
cleaning that up now to make it publicly available, in case anybody wants it). I altered the PSPRand program so that it doesn't randomize ALL video files. I'm working on the PocketPC version of the Limit right now, and once that's done, I'll finally be able to get back to my "Cuts" game.
The nice thing is, I can still play GTA. I just don't feel like I need to do it. I've reached the point where it can be "just a game" to me again.
And it's great to be free. Don't get me wrong, I love GTA, but all the same, I love getting my life back too.
